  • Regular maintenance is important for proper functioning of the springs, lubrication helps extend their lifespan, signs of wear and tear indicate the need for maintenance or replacement, adjusting tension ensures optimal performance and safety, and seeking professional help is essential for handling heavy-duty springs safely and efficiently.

The Purpose of Garage Door Springs

Garage door springs, also known as torsion springs, are essential for effortlessly lifting and lowering heavy-duty doors. They play a crucial role in the smooth operation of garage doors by counterbalancing the weight and tension of the door. The installation of garage door springs is an important step in ensuring the proper functioning of your garage door. These springs provide numerous benefits, such as reducing strain on the opener motor and cables, preventing damage to the door panels, and extending the lifespan of your garage door system.

There are different types of garage door springs available, each designed to handle specific weights and sizes of doors. By understanding these variations, you can choose the right type of spring that suits your heavy-duty door requirements. It’s important to consider factors such as wire size, coil diameter, and length when selecting a spring that will effectively balance your garage door.

Moving on to discussing types of garage door springs…

Types of Garage Door Springs

When it comes to heavy-duty doors, you’ll be glad to know there are different types of springs available. These springs play a crucial role in supporting the weight of your garage door and ensuring smooth operation.

The two main types of springs used for heavy-duty doors are torsion springs and extension springs.

  1. Torsion Springs: These are tightly wound metal coils that store mechanical energy when twisted. They are mounted horizontally above the garage door and work by unwinding and winding up as the door opens and closes. Torsion springs provide better balance, control, and durability for heavy-duty doors.

  2. Extension Springs: Unlike torsion springs, these are installed vertically on both sides of the garage door tracks. They expand and contract as the door moves, providing counterbalance to support the weight. Extension springs are commonly used for lighter heavy-duty doors.

Considering these factors can help you choose the right type of spring for your heavy-duty garage door without compromising safety or performance.

Factors to Consider for Heavy-Duty Doors

To ensure the best performance for your heavy-duty doors, you’ll want to consider a few important factors.

  • The weight capacity of the springs is crucial when it comes to handling heavy doors. Make sure you choose springs that can support the weight of your door without strain.

  • It’s also essential to consider the spring lifespan. Heavy-duty doors require stronger and more durable springs that can withstand frequent use and heavy loads over an extended period.

  • Regular maintenance is vital to keep your garage door operating smoothly and prevent any potential issues with the springs.

In the next section, we will discuss the importance of regular maintenance in ensuring optimal performance and longevity for your garage door system.

Importance of Regular Maintenance

To ensure the proper functioning of your heavy-duty garage door springs, regular maintenance is crucial.

Start by lubricating the springs to reduce friction and prevent premature wear.

Check for any signs of wear and tear such as fraying or cracking, which could indicate that replacement is necessary.

Finally, adjust the tension of the springs as needed to maintain optimal performance and safety.

By following these key steps, you can prolong the lifespan of your heavy-duty door springs and avoid potential issues down the line.

Lubricating the Springs

Before lubricating the springs, imagine the smooth and effortless glide of your heavy-duty garage door as it opens and closes with ease.

Regularly lubricating the springs is crucial for preventing rust and extending their lifespan. By applying a high-quality silicone or lithium-based grease to all moving parts of the springs, you ensure that they operate smoothly and quietly. This reduces friction and wear, preventing unnecessary strain on the door opener motor.

Additionally, lubrication helps to protect against corrosion caused by moisture, which can weaken the springs over time. Remember to clean off any dirt or debris before applying lubricant to ensure optimal performance.

After you have finished lubricating the springs, it’s important to check for any signs of wear and tear that may require further maintenance or replacement parts.

Checking for Wear and Tear

Now, take a closer look at the springs and carefully inspect them for any signs of wear and tear that may require further maintenance or replacement parts.

Replacing worn springs is crucial to ensure the proper functionality of your heavy-duty garage door. Look out for common signs of wear and tear such as rust, fraying, or gaps in the coils.

Rust can weaken the metal, causing it to break under tension. Fraying indicates that the springs have been subjected to excessive stress and are at risk of snapping. Gaps in the coils suggest that the springs have lost their elasticity and need to be replaced.

If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to address them promptly to avoid potential accidents or damage to your garage door system.

Now let’s move on to adjusting tension…

Adjusting Tension

Now that you have checked for wear and tear on your garage door springs, it’s time to move on to the next step: adjusting tension.

Proper spring tension is crucial for heavy-duty doors as it ensures smooth operation and prevents unnecessary strain on the motor.

To adjust the tension, locate the adjustment screws or nuts on the torsion spring system. Using a winding bar, turn the screws or nuts in small increments to either increase or decrease the tension.

Be sure to make equal adjustments to both sides of the door for balanced performance.

Test the door after each adjustment by opening and closing it manually to ensure optimal functionality.

Once you have adjusted the spring tension, you can proceed with caution knowing that your garage door will handle its heavy-duty duties effectively.

However, if at any point you feel unsure about this process or encounter difficulties, it’s best to seek professional help without delay.

When to Seek Professional Help

If you’re struggling to lift your heavy-duty garage door, it might be time to call in the professionals. While there are common DIY repairs for garage doors, dealing with heavy-duty springs is not one of them.

These springs are under immense tension and can cause serious injury if mishandled. One of the signs of spring failure is difficulty lifting the door manually or hearing a loud noise when opening or closing it. Another sign is if your door starts sagging on one side or becomes misaligned. These issues indicate that the springs are not functioning properly and need professional attention.

Attempting to fix these problems yourself can lead to further damage and potential safety hazards. So, for your own safety and peace of mind, it’s best to leave handling heavy-duty garage door springs to the experts who have the knowledge and experience to handle them safely and efficiently.

Conclusion

In conclusion, garage door springs play a crucial role in handling heavy-duty doors. They provide the necessary strength and support to lift and lower these doors effortlessly.

Regular maintenance is essential to ensure their optimal performance and longevity. Failure to maintain them can lead to costly repairs or even accidents.

For example, imagine a homeowner neglecting the maintenance of their garage door springs. One day, while attempting to open the heavy door, the worn-out springs snap, causing significant damage and endangering anyone nearby.

Thus, professional help should be sought when dealing with heavy-duty doors to ensure safety and prevent such incidents from occurring.

The service and the work that was done was exceptional. We needed to replace three very old (and very heavy) garage doors in a home that was built in 1960. There were a number of challenges along the way and each one was met professionally and in a timely manner. Lisa was an excellent communicator and highly responsive. Kevin did an extraordinary job with a fairly involved installation. His 'can do' attitude was very refreshing and reassuring. As noted, the final result was terrific. The pricing was VERY reasonable and very fair. The install was completed two days ago and I have already received compliments from the neighbors!

On Oct. 31 my electric gate stopped working and I called Alpha Gate and Door and talked to Lisa. She was great and based on my symptoms said she thought it was the battery and she would send Kealan out the next day. He came and replaced the battery with a 12 v 55ah battery. I asked him to rehang my reflector light on my neighbors new fence so the motion sensor would work. It had worked fine prior to that being taken down. He did that and it worked for a minute and then stopped. He rewired it and it worked once and he left. The next day I noticed the sensor was not working but I didn’t really care because my dog is too small to trigger it. I was charged $448 -$169 for the service call, $249 for the battery and $30 to rewire the sensor. I work exclusively from home as an attorney and never even use the gate during the week. A few weeks later the gate stopped operation completely and I called on Dec. 6. Lisa said she would send Kealan out. He called me and I said the gate would not open at all, the sensor was not working and the sensor was making a nonstop buzzing noise. He arrived fairly late in the day and I saw him pull into my driveway but he did not come to my door and went straight to the gate. I immediately went out there and I saw when he opened the cover that the battery charger lights were not on. He was in a very bad mood and starting ripping the battery out and said I needed a new battery. I said I guess it was because the battery charger wasn’t plugged in. I was not mad about it because that can happen to anyone. He got really mad at that point, I guess because I knew what had happened. He demanded to know whether I had unplugged it, grabbed a huge battery that would not even fit in my unit, then declared the charger had “allegedly” not been plugged in. As he was trying to force the battery in and was slamming everything around, I asked him if he had a smaller battery. He said no, it was whomever installed my gate opener’s fault because the antenna was on the left and they were usually on the right. He continued to try to force it but could not get the cover on. So he gave up and said he would come back Monday with a smaller battery. I assumed the sensor was not working because the battery had died. I heard nothing from anyone the following Monday and had had it so I called Lisa and yelled and told her the way Kealan had behaved and when was the battery actually going to be installed. She said she would talk to Kealan and I said do you have anybody else who is not a jackass who could come instead. She said she would investigate and call me back. She never called me back and apparently the next day around lunch Kealan snuck onto my property, did not tell me he was there, and put in another battery and texted me the gate was now working. I went outside to try it and the remote was not working at all. I have programmed remotes many times (I have done a lot of products liability work and handled cases with complex machinery failures and deposed a lot of engineers so I am not unfamiliar with this type of equipment) and checked it and the receiver was getting the signal from the transmitter but the control board was not opening the gate.So I called Lisa, explained he had come but not told me he was there, and that the remote was not opening the gate. I also apologized for yelling at her the day before because it was not her fault. She said she would tell him. After that call I remembered there is a reset button on the Patriot control board so I went out and pushed it and that caused the remote to work so I called Lisa and said it was working. The new battery is smaller than the one he had originally put in and retails for about $95. The motion sensor still does not work, I have done jumping jacks in front of of it to know avail. I am not bothering to call again about that because Kealan would probably get really mad again. He does NOT like his competence put into question. You decide if $249 is a fair markup on a $95 battery.

I highly recommend Alpha Gate & Door Company! The entire process was incredibly quick and professional! I spoke with Lisa (she’s amazing and extremely knowledgeable) on Tuesday and she came out Wednesday with a recommendation to replace the gate opener that was faulty and couldn’t handle the weight of my gate. I received the reasonable quote the same day and their technician, Keelan, was at my house on Friday of the SAME WEEK to install. Keelan was just as courteous and professional as Lisa and did an amazing job! The install was perfect and pristine! I’ve tried working with other companies and honestly they are hands down the best! If there were 10 stars available, I would give them 10!
