Key Takeaways

  • Chain link fencing provides security and defines property boundaries.
  • Proper mesh attachment techniques ensure a secure and durable fence.
  • Tension wire and fence ties enhance the strength and stability of the fence.
  • Gate installation and high-quality gate hardware are essential for easy access and added security.

Assess Your Property and Determine the Fence Layout

Before you start installing chain link fencing, it’s important to assess your property and determine the fence layout. This initial step is crucial to ensure that you have a clear understanding of your property boundaries and the materials you will need for the installation. Assessing your property boundaries will help you avoid any potential disputes with your neighbors and ensure that you are staying within your property lines. It can be as simple as checking your property deed or consulting with a surveyor to get an accurate measurement.

Once you have a clear idea of your property boundaries, you can move on to determining the required materials. This includes measuring the length and height of the fence, as well as considering any additional features such as gates or posts. By accurately assessing your property and determining the fence layout, you are setting yourself up for a successful installation process.

Now that you have assessed your property and determined the fence layout, it’s time to prepare the site for installation. This involves clearing any obstacles such as bushes or debris that may interfere with the fence installation. Additionally, it’s important to check for any underground utilities to avoid damaging them during the installation process. By taking the time to properly prepare the site, you are ensuring a smooth and efficient installation process.

Prepare the Site for Installation

To get started, make sure you’ve cleared the site for installation of your chain link fencing. Site preparation is crucial for ensuring a sturdy and long-lasting fence. Follow these steps to prepare your site effectively:

  1. Clear the area: Remove any vegetation, rocks, or debris from the site. This will provide a clean and level surface for your fence.

  2. Mark the boundaries: Use stakes and string to mark the boundaries of your fence. This will help you visualize the layout and ensure accuracy during installation.

  3. Test the soil: Before digging the post holes, it’s important to test the soil for stability. Soil testing will help determine if any additional measures need to be taken, such as adding concrete or gravel to provide proper support.

Choose the Right Materials

When choosing the right materials for your chain link fence, there are a few key points to consider.

First, you need to select the appropriate chain link size and gauge based on the level of security you need and the type of property you are fencing in.

Next, consider the type of coating or finish that will best protect your fence from rust and corrosion.

Lastly, decide on the height and gate options that will provide the functionality and access you desire.

You should always consider the appropriate chain link size and gauge for your fencing needs. Choosing the right size and gauge is crucial to ensure the durability and effectiveness of your chain link fence. Factors to consider include the purpose of the fence, the level of security required, and the environmental conditions in which it will be installed. If you need a fence for residential purposes, a smaller chain link size and gauge may be sufficient. However, for commercial or industrial use, a larger size and gauge would be more appropriate. Tips for making the right decision include consulting with a professional, considering the strength and visibility of the fence, and evaluating the budget constraints. By selecting the appropriate chain link size and gauge, you can ensure a fence that meets your specific needs.

When considering the type of coating or finish for your chain link fence, it is important to take into account factors such as weather resistance, aesthetics, and maintenance requirements.

Consider the Type of Coating or Finish

For optimal results, it’s important to consider factors such as weather resistance, aesthetics, and maintenance requirements when choosing the type of coating or finish for your chain link fence. Different types of chain link fence coatings offer various benefits and drawbacks. Here are three options to consider:

  1. Vinyl Coating: This type of coating provides excellent weather resistance, protecting your fence from rust and corrosion. It also comes in a variety of colors, allowing you to customize the look of your fence. However, vinyl coatings may require more maintenance over time, as they can fade and peel.

  2. Galvanized Coating: Galvanized chain link fences are coated with a layer of zinc, providing superior rust and corrosion resistance. They require minimal maintenance and offer a classic silver finish. However, they may not offer as many aesthetic options as other coatings.

  3. Polyester Coating: Polyester coatings provide a durable and fade-resistant finish, making them a great choice for areas with harsh weather conditions. They also come in a wide range of colors, allowing you to match your fence to your desired aesthetic. However, polyester coatings may be more expensive compared to other options.

Considering the pros and cons of these different chain link fence finishes will help you make an informed decision when selecting the type of coating or finish for your fence.

Once you have chosen the appropriate coating, it’s time to move on to the next step: deciding on the height and gate options.

Decide on the Height and Gate Options

Deciding on the height and gate options involves considering factors such as security, accessibility, and aesthetic preferences. When it comes to gate height options, you have various choices to meet your specific needs.

A taller gate provides added security and privacy, preventing unauthorized access to your property. On the other hand, a lower gate allows for better visibility and a more open feel. Consider the purpose of your fence and the level of security you require to make the right decision.

Additionally, gate latch types are crucial for both functionality and security. Choose a latch that is easy to use, yet secure enough to keep your gate closed and locked.

Now that you have determined the height and gate options, it’s time to set the posts properly for a sturdy and long-lasting chain link fence.

Set the Posts Properly

To ensure stability, it’s essential to properly set the posts when installing chain link fencing. Proper post placement and post hole digging techniques are crucial for a strong and secure fence that will stand the test of time.

When it comes to proper post placement, you want to make sure that each post is evenly spaced and aligned. This will not only enhance the overall appearance of your fence but also ensure its structural integrity. Use a tape measure to accurately measure the distance between each post and mark the spots where the posts will be installed.

Next, it’s time to dig the post holes. Use a post hole digger to create holes that are deep enough to accommodate at least one-third of the post’s length. This will provide the necessary stability for your fence. Make sure the holes are wide enough to allow for concrete to be poured around the posts, providing additional support.

Once the post holes are dug, it’s time to install the posts. Place each post into its designated hole and fill it with concrete. Use a level to ensure that the posts are perfectly vertical and straight. Allow the concrete to dry and set before proceeding to the next step.

With the posts properly set, it’s time to move on to the next section of the installation process. Install the chain link fabric and accessories to complete your fence and provide the security and privacy you desire.

Now that you’ve set the posts properly, it’s time to move on to the next steps in installing your chain link fence.

The first key point is to unroll and attach the fabric to the posts, ensuring it is securely fastened to create a strong and stable fence.

Then, you’ll want to add tension wire and fence ties to further enhance the durability and strength of your fence.

Lastly, don’t forget to install gates and gate hardware to provide convenient access to your fenced area while maintaining security.

Unroll and Attach the Fabric to the Posts

Once you’ve measured and positioned the posts, it’s time to unroll and attach the fabric to them. This is where your chain link fence starts to take shape, creating a boundary that not only provides security but also adds a sense of belonging to your property.

As you begin this process, remember to utilize effective mesh attachment techniques to ensure a secure and durable fence. Here are some tools that will come in handy for unrolling and attaching the fabric:

  • Fence pliers: These versatile tools allow you to grip, twist, and cut wire with ease, making the installation process smoother.
  • Tension bands: These metal bands wrap around the posts and hold the fabric in place, ensuring a tight and secure fit.
  • Hog rings: These small, curved metal clips are used to connect the fabric to the tension bands, providing additional stability.

By employing these mesh attachment techniques and using the right tools, you can ensure that your chain link fabric is securely fastened to the posts.

Now, let’s move on to the next step – adding tension wire and fence ties – to further enhance the strength and stability of your fence.

Add Tension Wire and Fence Ties

After attaching the fabric to the posts, it’s important to add tension wire and fence ties to enhance the strength and stability of your fence.

Chain link maintenance is crucial for ensuring the longevity of your fence and keeping it in top shape. Tension wire acts as a support system, preventing the fabric from sagging or loosening over time. It runs through the top and bottom of the fence, providing that extra reinforcement.

Fence ties, on the other hand, secure the fabric to the posts, creating a tight and secure barrier. If you’re looking for an alternative to tension wire, consider using a heavy-duty cable or synthetic materials specifically designed for chain link fences.

By incorporating these elements into your fence installation, you can guarantee a durable and reliable fence.

Now, let’s move on to installing gates and gate hardware, the next important step in creating your perfect fence.

Install Gates and Gate Hardware

To complete your fence, you’ll need to install the gates and gate hardware for easy access and added security. Here are some key steps to follow for successful gate installation and gate hardware selection:

  1. Measure and plan: Determine the size and location of your gate. Measure the opening and ensure it aligns with your fence layout.

  2. Choose the right gate: Select a gate style that complements your chain link fence and meets your needs, whether it’s a single or double gate.

  3. Install gate posts: Dig holes for the gate posts and secure them with concrete. Ensure they are level and plumb for proper gate operation.

  4. Attach gate hardware: Select high-quality gate hardware such as hinges, latches, and locks. Install them securely to ensure smooth operation and enhanced security.

By following these steps, you’ll have a well-installed gate that not only provides easy access but also adds an extra layer of security to your property.

So go ahead and complete your fence with confidence!

Conclusion

Congratulations! You’ve successfully navigated through the best practices for installing chain link fencing.

By assessing your property and carefully determining the fence layout, you’ve laid the groundwork for a secure and aesthetically pleasing fence.

With the right materials and properly set posts, your fence will stand strong against the test of time.

Now, as you install the chain link fabric and accessories, your fence will come to life, weaving together protection and beauty like a colorful tapestry.

The service and the work that was done was exceptional. We needed to replace three very old (and very heavy) garage doors in a home that was built in 1960. There were a number of challenges along the way and each one was met professionally and in a timely manner. Lisa was an excellent communicator and highly responsive. Kevin did an extraordinary job with a fairly involved installation. His 'can do' attitude was very refreshing and reassuring. As noted, the final result was terrific. The pricing was VERY reasonable and very fair. The install was completed two days ago and I have already received compliments from the neighbors!

On Oct. 31 my electric gate stopped working and I called Alpha Gate and Door and talked to Lisa. She was great and based on my symptoms said she thought it was the battery and she would send Kealan out the next day. He came and replaced the battery with a 12 v 55ah battery. I asked him to rehang my reflector light on my neighbors new fence so the motion sensor would work. It had worked fine prior to that being taken down. He did that and it worked for a minute and then stopped. He rewired it and it worked once and he left. The next day I noticed the sensor was not working but I didn’t really care because my dog is too small to trigger it. I was charged $448 -$169 for the service call, $249 for the battery and $30 to rewire the sensor. I work exclusively from home as an attorney and never even use the gate during the week. A few weeks later the gate stopped operation completely and I called on Dec. 6. Lisa said she would send Kealan out. He called me and I said the gate would not open at all, the sensor was not working and the sensor was making a nonstop buzzing noise. He arrived fairly late in the day and I saw him pull into my driveway but he did not come to my door and went straight to the gate. I immediately went out there and I saw when he opened the cover that the battery charger lights were not on. He was in a very bad mood and starting ripping the battery out and said I needed a new battery. I said I guess it was because the battery charger wasn’t plugged in. I was not mad about it because that can happen to anyone. He got really mad at that point, I guess because I knew what had happened. He demanded to know whether I had unplugged it, grabbed a huge battery that would not even fit in my unit, then declared the charger had “allegedly” not been plugged in. As he was trying to force the battery in and was slamming everything around, I asked him if he had a smaller battery. He said no, it was whomever installed my gate opener’s fault because the antenna was on the left and they were usually on the right. He continued to try to force it but could not get the cover on. So he gave up and said he would come back Monday with a smaller battery. I assumed the sensor was not working because the battery had died. I heard nothing from anyone the following Monday and had had it so I called Lisa and yelled and told her the way Kealan had behaved and when was the battery actually going to be installed. She said she would talk to Kealan and I said do you have anybody else who is not a jackass who could come instead. She said she would investigate and call me back. She never called me back and apparently the next day around lunch Kealan snuck onto my property, did not tell me he was there, and put in another battery and texted me the gate was now working. I went outside to try it and the remote was not working at all. I have programmed remotes many times (I have done a lot of products liability work and handled cases with complex machinery failures and deposed a lot of engineers so I am not unfamiliar with this type of equipment) and checked it and the receiver was getting the signal from the transmitter but the control board was not opening the gate.So I called Lisa, explained he had come but not told me he was there, and that the remote was not opening the gate. I also apologized for yelling at her the day before because it was not her fault. She said she would tell him. After that call I remembered there is a reset button on the Patriot control board so I went out and pushed it and that caused the remote to work so I called Lisa and said it was working. The new battery is smaller than the one he had originally put in and retails for about $95. The motion sensor still does not work, I have done jumping jacks in front of of it to know avail. I am not bothering to call again about that because Kealan would probably get really mad again. He does NOT like his competence put into question. You decide if $249 is a fair markup on a $95 battery.

I highly recommend Alpha Gate & Door Company! The entire process was incredibly quick and professional! I spoke with Lisa (she’s amazing and extremely knowledgeable) on Tuesday and she came out Wednesday with a recommendation to replace the gate opener that was faulty and couldn’t handle the weight of my gate. I received the reasonable quote the same day and their technician, Keelan, was at my house on Friday of the SAME WEEK to install. Keelan was just as courteous and professional as Lisa and did an amazing job! The install was perfect and pristine! I’ve tried working with other companies and honestly they are hands down the best! If there were 10 stars available, I would give them 10!
