Key Takeaways

  • Applying primer before painting is essential as it enhances paint adhesion, improves paint durability, ensures a better quality finish, and increases resistance to weather elements.
  • Thorough quality control inspections are important to check for imperfections or defects, reinforce weak areas if needed, ensure even paint application, and guarantee a visually appealing fence.
  • Ensuring even paint application is crucial and can be achieved through proper painting techniques, applying paint in thin and even coats, avoiding excessive paint buildup, and using appropriate painting tools.
  • Addressing any imperfections or defects by repairing visible damages, fixing loose or broken components, reinforcing weak areas with additional support, smoothing out rough surfaces, and correcting misalignments is essential for a high-quality chain link fence.

Design and Material Selection

The design and material selection of chain link fences greatly impact their durability and overall quality. When it comes to design considerations, it’s important to choose a fence height that suits your needs, whether it’s for security or aesthetics. Additionally, the spacing between the chain link wires should be carefully chosen to strike the right balance between visibility and privacy.

Material properties play a crucial role in ensuring the longevity of the fence. Opting for galvanized steel wires provides excellent corrosion resistance, making the fence suitable for outdoor use. The thickness of the wire is another important factor to consider, as it directly affects the strength and durability of the fence. Thicker wires are more resistant to bending and provide better protection against intruders. Lastly, the coating used on the wires can enhance their lifespan. Vinyl coatings, for example, not only add an extra layer of protection against corrosion but also come in a variety of colors to suit your aesthetic preferences.

Now that we have explored the design and material selection, let’s dive into the wire weaving process.

Wire Weaving Process

To weave wire into a chain link fence, you’ll start by unrolling and straightening the wire. Once the wire is ready, feed it through the weaving machine, ensuring it’s properly aligned.

As the wire passes through the machine, it’ll be woven together to create the distinctive diamond-shaped pattern that is characteristic of chain link fences.

Unroll and straighten the wire

Start by unrolling and straightening the wire before moving on to the next step. This is an essential part of the manufacturing process for chain link fences.

Wire unrolling involves carefully unwinding the coiled wire, making sure it doesn’t tangle or kink. Once unrolled, you need to straighten the wire to ensure it is smooth and free from any bends or twists. This step is crucial as it affects the overall quality and appearance of the final product.

Feed the wire through the weaving machine

First, feed the wire through the weaving machine, ensuring it’s aligned properly for a smooth and efficient weaving process. This step is crucial in manufacturing chain link fences as it sets the foundation for the diamond-shaped pattern.

Once the wire is threaded, the next step is wire tensioning. This involves adjusting the tension of the wire to ensure it’s neither too loose nor too tight. Proper tensioning is essential to maintain the structural integrity of the fence.

Once the wire tension is set, the weaving machine is activated, and the wire is cut at the desired length using wire cutting tools. This prepares the wire for the next phase of the manufacturing process – weaving it to create the diamond-shaped pattern that characterizes chain link fences.

Weave the wire to create the diamond-shaped pattern

Now, align the wire properly and begin weaving it to create the diamond-shaped pattern.

To achieve the desired result, it’s essential to ensure proper wire tension. This will prevent sagging and maintain the structural integrity of the fence.

As you weave the wire, pay attention to the diamond pattern, which is the hallmark of chain link fences. Each wire should intersect with the adjacent ones at a 90-degree angle, forming a strong and visually appealing design.

The diamond pattern not only adds aesthetic value but also enhances the security and durability of the fence.

Once you have completed the weaving process, the next step involves galvanization or vinyl coating to protect the fence from rust and corrosion, ensuring its long-lasting performance.

Galvanization or Vinyl Coating

When it comes to enhancing the durability and aesthetics of your chain link fence, there are two key options to consider.

First, you can dip the woven wire in a hot zinc bath for galvanization, which provides a protective coating against rust and corrosion.

Additionally, you can apply a vinyl coating to the chain link fence, offering both increased durability and a range of attractive colors to choose from.

Dip the woven wire in a hot zinc bath for galvanization

To galvanize the woven wire, you’ll need to dip it in a hot zinc bath. This hot dip process provides excellent corrosion protection, ensuring your chain link fence will last for years to come. Here are some reasons why galvanization is crucial for your fence:

  • Enhanced Durability: The hot zinc bath forms a protective layer on the wire, making it resistant to rust and corrosion.
  • Longevity: Galvanized chain link fences have a longer lifespan compared to untreated ones, saving you money on replacements.
  • Low Maintenance: With galvanization, your fence requires minimal upkeep, giving you more time to enjoy your outdoor space.
  • Cost-Effective: Investing in a galvanized chain link fence is a smart financial decision, as it offers long-term protection at an affordable price.

Once your wire is galvanized, the next step is to apply a vinyl coating for added durability and aesthetics.

Apply a vinyl coating for added durability and aesthetics

Now that the woven wire has been galvanized for added strength and protection, it’s time to take your chain link fence to the next level.

By applying a vinyl coating to the wire, you can enhance both its durability and aesthetics. Vinyl coating offers a multitude of benefits, such as increased resistance to rust, corrosion, and weathering. It also provides an extra layer of protection against scratches and dents, ensuring that your fence will remain in pristine condition for years to come.

The vinyl coating process involves immersing the galvanized wire into a liquid vinyl solution and then heating it to bond the coating securely. This process not only enhances the fence’s longevity but also allows you to choose from a variety of colors to match your style and surroundings.

With the vinyl coating applied, your chain link fence will not only offer security but also become a beautiful addition to your property.

As we move forward to the fabrication of the framework, let’s explore how the various components come together to create a sturdy and reliable fence.

Fabrication of Framework

The first step in fabricating the framework for chain link fences is selecting the appropriate gauge of steel. This determines the thickness and strength of the fence, ensuring its durability and security. Once the steel gauge is determined, the fabrication process begins using various techniques to shape and assemble the framework.

Here are three key techniques used in the fabrication of chain link fence framework:

  1. Cutting: The steel is cut into the desired lengths using specialized tools such as saws or shears. This ensures precise measurements and allows for easy assembly.

  2. Bending: The steel is then bent into the required shapes using bending machines or manual methods. This step is crucial for creating the corners and curves of the fence, providing stability and aesthetic appeal.

  3. Welding: To join the different pieces of framework together, welding is employed. This technique ensures a strong and seamless connection, enhancing the overall strength and structural integrity.

Throughout the fabrication process, strict quality control measures are implemented to ensure that each piece of framework meets the highest standards. Inspections are carried out to check for any defects or imperfections that could compromise the fence’s performance or appearance.

With the completion of the fabrication process, the framework is now ready for the finishing touches, which will further enhance the fence’s functionality and visual appeal.

Finishing Touches

Once you’ve chosen the appropriate gauge of steel and completed the fabrication process, it’s time to focus on adding the finishing touches to your fence. These final steps are crucial in ensuring the longevity and aesthetic appeal of your chain link fence.

One important aspect to consider is the painting technique you’ll use. A high-quality paint job not only enhances the overall appearance of your fence but also acts as a protective barrier against rust and corrosion. Before painting, make sure to thoroughly clean the surface of the fence to remove any dirt or debris. Applying a primer beforehand will further enhance the adhesion of the paint and improve its durability.

When it comes to quality control, it’s essential to inspect the fence for any imperfections or defects. Check for any loose components or weak spots, and reinforce them if necessary. Additionally, ensure that the paint has been applied evenly and that there are no drips or runs. Taking the time to carefully inspect and address any issues will guarantee a fence that not only looks great but also stands the test of time.

Conclusion

So there you have it, the fascinating journey of how chain link fences are made.

From the careful design and material selection, to the intricate wire weaving process, and the crucial galvanization or vinyl coating, every step is essential in creating a durable and reliable fence.

The fabrication of the framework and the finishing touches complete the process, resulting in a functional and aesthetically pleasing fence.

Now, when you see a chain link fence, you will appreciate the craftsmanship and ingenuity that goes into its creation, making it truly a marvel of manufacturing.

The service and the work that was done was exceptional. We needed to replace three very old (and very heavy) garage doors in a home that was built in 1960. There were a number of challenges along the way and each one was met professionally and in a timely manner. Lisa was an excellent communicator and highly responsive. Kevin did an extraordinary job with a fairly involved installation. His 'can do' attitude was very refreshing and reassuring. As noted, the final result was terrific. The pricing was VERY reasonable and very fair. The install was completed two days ago and I have already received compliments from the neighbors!

On Oct. 31 my electric gate stopped working and I called Alpha Gate and Door and talked to Lisa. She was great and based on my symptoms said she thought it was the battery and she would send Kealan out the next day. He came and replaced the battery with a 12 v 55ah battery. I asked him to rehang my reflector light on my neighbors new fence so the motion sensor would work. It had worked fine prior to that being taken down. He did that and it worked for a minute and then stopped. He rewired it and it worked once and he left. The next day I noticed the sensor was not working but I didn’t really care because my dog is too small to trigger it. I was charged $448 -$169 for the service call, $249 for the battery and $30 to rewire the sensor. I work exclusively from home as an attorney and never even use the gate during the week. A few weeks later the gate stopped operation completely and I called on Dec. 6. Lisa said she would send Kealan out. He called me and I said the gate would not open at all, the sensor was not working and the sensor was making a nonstop buzzing noise. He arrived fairly late in the day and I saw him pull into my driveway but he did not come to my door and went straight to the gate. I immediately went out there and I saw when he opened the cover that the battery charger lights were not on. He was in a very bad mood and starting ripping the battery out and said I needed a new battery. I said I guess it was because the battery charger wasn’t plugged in. I was not mad about it because that can happen to anyone. He got really mad at that point, I guess because I knew what had happened. He demanded to know whether I had unplugged it, grabbed a huge battery that would not even fit in my unit, then declared the charger had “allegedly” not been plugged in. As he was trying to force the battery in and was slamming everything around, I asked him if he had a smaller battery. He said no, it was whomever installed my gate opener’s fault because the antenna was on the left and they were usually on the right. He continued to try to force it but could not get the cover on. So he gave up and said he would come back Monday with a smaller battery. I assumed the sensor was not working because the battery had died. I heard nothing from anyone the following Monday and had had it so I called Lisa and yelled and told her the way Kealan had behaved and when was the battery actually going to be installed. She said she would talk to Kealan and I said do you have anybody else who is not a jackass who could come instead. She said she would investigate and call me back. She never called me back and apparently the next day around lunch Kealan snuck onto my property, did not tell me he was there, and put in another battery and texted me the gate was now working. I went outside to try it and the remote was not working at all. I have programmed remotes many times (I have done a lot of products liability work and handled cases with complex machinery failures and deposed a lot of engineers so I am not unfamiliar with this type of equipment) and checked it and the receiver was getting the signal from the transmitter but the control board was not opening the gate.So I called Lisa, explained he had come but not told me he was there, and that the remote was not opening the gate. I also apologized for yelling at her the day before because it was not her fault. She said she would tell him. After that call I remembered there is a reset button on the Patriot control board so I went out and pushed it and that caused the remote to work so I called Lisa and said it was working. The new battery is smaller than the one he had originally put in and retails for about $95. The motion sensor still does not work, I have done jumping jacks in front of of it to know avail. I am not bothering to call again about that because Kealan would probably get really mad again. He does NOT like his competence put into question. You decide if $249 is a fair markup on a $95 battery.
