Discover The Hidden Flaws Of Wrought Iron Fencing! Avoid Costly Mistakes And Find Out Why This Popular Choice May Not Be As Perfect As It Seems

Looking to enhance the charm and security of your property? Consider the timeless elegance of wrought iron fencing.

However, before you make your final decision, it’s important to understand the drawbacks that come with this classic choice.

While wrought iron fencing may exude a sense of prestige, it also demands high maintenance and is vulnerable to rust and damage.

Additionally, it offers limited privacy and security, comes with costly installation and repair, and provides limited design options.

Stay informed to make the best choice for your property.

Key Takeaways

  • High maintenance requirements: Regular painting and inspections, as well as significant time and effort for upkeep.
  • Vulnerability to rust and damage: Wrought iron fencing is susceptible to rust and damage, unlike alternative materials that are more resistant.
  • Costly installation and repair: While durable and long-lasting, proper maintenance is necessary to save money. Additionally, both production and maintenance of wrought iron fencing have environmental impacts.
  • Limited privacy and security: The open design of wrought iron fencing lacks privacy and security, with easy visibility into the property and exploitable gaps between iron bars. Regular maintenance is required to prevent vegetation overgrowth.

High Maintenance Requirements

Maintaining a wrought iron fence can be time-consuming and expensive, but with proper care, you can keep it looking its best. Regular painting is essential to maintain the aesthetic appeal and prevent rust formation. By painting your wrought iron fence every few years, you create a protective barrier against the elements, ensuring its longevity.

Additionally, frequent inspections are necessary to identify any signs of damage, such as loose or rusted sections. By addressing these issues promptly, you can prevent further deterioration and costly repairs.

Investing time and effort into the maintenance of your wrought iron fence not only enhances its visual appeal but also ensures its functionality. Regular painting helps to preserve the fence’s beauty, making your property stand out and creating a sense of belonging in your community. Moreover, by conducting frequent inspections, you can identify and address any vulnerability to rust and damage, ensuring the fence’s structural integrity.

However, despite these maintenance efforts, wrought iron fences are still susceptible to rust and damage. Understanding these vulnerabilities is crucial in order to take appropriate measures to prevent them.

Vulnerability to Rust and Damage

To keep your fence looking good, you’ll need to regularly inspect and address any rust or damage. Wrought iron fencing, while elegant and classic in appearance, is unfortunately vulnerable to rust and damage over time. But don’t worry, there are prevention methods you can implement to minimize these issues and keep your fence in top shape.

Firstly, applying a protective coating to your wrought iron fence can help prevent rust from forming. There are various rust-resistant paints and sealants available in the market that can provide a barrier against moisture and oxidation. Regularly inspecting your fence for any signs of rust or damage is also crucial. If you notice any areas that are starting to rust, be sure to address them promptly. Scrub off the rust with a wire brush and apply a rust converter or primer to prevent further corrosion.

While wrought iron is a popular choice for fencing, it’s important to note that there are alternative materials available that offer greater durability and require less maintenance. Materials like aluminum and vinyl can provide similar aesthetics to wrought iron but are more resistant to rust and damage. By considering these alternative materials, you can have a fence that not only looks good but also requires less upkeep.

In addition to the vulnerability to rust and damage, limited privacy and security are also important factors to consider when it comes to wrought iron fencing.

Limited Privacy and Security

Privacy and security can be a concern with wrought iron fences due to their open design. While these fences may offer a sense of elegance and sophistication, they lack the ability to provide the level of privacy and security that many homeowners desire.

The open design of wrought iron fences allows for easy visibility, making it easier for strangers to peer into your property. This lack of privacy can leave you feeling exposed and vulnerable.

In addition to limited privacy, wrought iron fences also fail to provide adequate security. The gaps between the iron bars can be easily exploited, allowing unwanted intruders to access your property. This can increase the risk of theft, vandalism, and other security breaches.

Furthermore, the open design of wrought iron fences can have a negative impact on noise pollution. The absence of solid panels or materials to block sound allows noise to easily pass through, resulting in a less peaceful and quiet environment. This can be particularly problematic if you live in a noisy neighborhood or near a busy road.

Another drawback of wrought iron fences is the maintenance requirements for vegetation. The open design allows plants to grow through the gaps, requiring regular pruning and upkeep to prevent overgrowth. This can be time-consuming and may add to the overall maintenance costs of your property.

Considering the limited privacy, inadequate security, noise pollution impact, and maintenance requirements for vegetation, it becomes clear that wrought iron fences may not be the most suitable choice for those seeking a secure and private living environment. However, the drawbacks don’t end there. The installation and repair of wrought iron fences can also be costly, as we will explore in the next section.

Costly Installation and Repair

The installation and repair of wrought iron fences can be expensive, adding to the overall cost of your property. However, it’s important to consider the long term durability and environmental impact of this type of fencing.

Here are some key points to help you understand the drawbacks:

  • Long term durability:
  • Wrought iron fences are known for their strength and durability, making them a popular choice for homeowners. They can withstand harsh weather conditions and are resistant to rotting and warping.
  • With proper maintenance, wrought iron fences can last for decades, providing a reliable and secure barrier for your property. This means you won’t have to worry about frequent repairs or replacements, saving you money in the long run.

  • Environmental impact:

  • While wrought iron fences are durable, they do have an environmental impact. The production of wrought iron involves mining and refining iron ore, which requires energy and releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
  • Additionally, the maintenance of wrought iron fences often involves the use of chemical coatings and paints, which can contribute to air and water pollution.

Considering these factors, it’s important to weigh the upfront cost of installation and repair against the long term durability and environmental impact of wrought iron fences. However, it’s worth noting that there are limited design options available with this type of fencing.

Limited Design Options

Considering the limited design options, homeowners may want to explore alternative fencing materials that offer more versatility and customization. While wrought iron fencing may have its benefits, it falls short in providing homeowners with a wide range of customization options to suit their personal style and preferences. Unlike other materials such as vinyl or wood, wrought iron fencing lacks the ability to be easily modified or customized. This can be frustrating for homeowners who want to create a unique and personalized look for their property.

When it comes to aesthetic appeal, wrought iron fencing may not be the best choice for those seeking a modern or contemporary look. The traditional black iron design can often feel outdated and may not complement the overall aesthetic of a modern home. Additionally, the limited design options can make it difficult to find a style that matches the architectural features of your property.

Fortunately, there are alternative fencing materials available that offer a wide range of customization options and can enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home. Vinyl and wood fencing, for example, come in various colors, styles, and designs, allowing homeowners to create a fence that perfectly suits their individual taste and complements the overall look of their property.

Conclusion

In conclusion, you should seriously consider the drawbacks of wrought iron fencing before making a decision.

The high maintenance requirements can be a real headache, constantly needing to clean, paint, and repair.

Not to mention, the vulnerability to rust and damage can be a real eyesore and compromise the security of your property.

Additionally, the limited privacy and security features may not meet your needs.

And let’s not forget the hefty installation and repair costs.

With so many limitations and expenses, it’s worth exploring other fencing options that offer more convenience, durability, and design flexibility.

The service and the work that was done was exceptional. We needed to replace three very old (and very heavy) garage doors in a home that was built in 1960. There were a number of challenges along the way and each one was met professionally and in a timely manner. Lisa was an excellent communicator and highly responsive. Kevin did an extraordinary job with a fairly involved installation. His 'can do' attitude was very refreshing and reassuring. As noted, the final result was terrific. The pricing was VERY reasonable and very fair. The install was completed two days ago and I have already received compliments from the neighbors!

On Oct. 31 my electric gate stopped working and I called Alpha Gate and Door and talked to Lisa. She was great and based on my symptoms said she thought it was the battery and she would send Kealan out the next day. He came and replaced the battery with a 12 v 55ah battery. I asked him to rehang my reflector light on my neighbors new fence so the motion sensor would work. It had worked fine prior to that being taken down. He did that and it worked for a minute and then stopped. He rewired it and it worked once and he left. The next day I noticed the sensor was not working but I didn’t really care because my dog is too small to trigger it. I was charged $448 -$169 for the service call, $249 for the battery and $30 to rewire the sensor. I work exclusively from home as an attorney and never even use the gate during the week. A few weeks later the gate stopped operation completely and I called on Dec. 6. Lisa said she would send Kealan out. He called me and I said the gate would not open at all, the sensor was not working and the sensor was making a nonstop buzzing noise. He arrived fairly late in the day and I saw him pull into my driveway but he did not come to my door and went straight to the gate. I immediately went out there and I saw when he opened the cover that the battery charger lights were not on. He was in a very bad mood and starting ripping the battery out and said I needed a new battery. I said I guess it was because the battery charger wasn’t plugged in. I was not mad about it because that can happen to anyone. He got really mad at that point, I guess because I knew what had happened. He demanded to know whether I had unplugged it, grabbed a huge battery that would not even fit in my unit, then declared the charger had “allegedly” not been plugged in. As he was trying to force the battery in and was slamming everything around, I asked him if he had a smaller battery. He said no, it was whomever installed my gate opener’s fault because the antenna was on the left and they were usually on the right. He continued to try to force it but could not get the cover on. So he gave up and said he would come back Monday with a smaller battery. I assumed the sensor was not working because the battery had died. I heard nothing from anyone the following Monday and had had it so I called Lisa and yelled and told her the way Kealan had behaved and when was the battery actually going to be installed. She said she would talk to Kealan and I said do you have anybody else who is not a jackass who could come instead. She said she would investigate and call me back. She never called me back and apparently the next day around lunch Kealan snuck onto my property, did not tell me he was there, and put in another battery and texted me the gate was now working. I went outside to try it and the remote was not working at all. I have programmed remotes many times (I have done a lot of products liability work and handled cases with complex machinery failures and deposed a lot of engineers so I am not unfamiliar with this type of equipment) and checked it and the receiver was getting the signal from the transmitter but the control board was not opening the gate.So I called Lisa, explained he had come but not told me he was there, and that the remote was not opening the gate. I also apologized for yelling at her the day before because it was not her fault. She said she would tell him. After that call I remembered there is a reset button on the Patriot control board so I went out and pushed it and that caused the remote to work so I called Lisa and said it was working. The new battery is smaller than the one he had originally put in and retails for about $95. The motion sensor still does not work, I have done jumping jacks in front of of it to know avail. I am not bothering to call again about that because Kealan would probably get really mad again. He does NOT like his competence put into question. You decide if $249 is a fair markup on a $95 battery.

I highly recommend Alpha Gate & Door Company! The entire process was incredibly quick and professional! I spoke with Lisa (she’s amazing and extremely knowledgeable) on Tuesday and she came out Wednesday with a recommendation to replace the gate opener that was faulty and couldn’t handle the weight of my gate. I received the reasonable quote the same day and their technician, Keelan, was at my house on Friday of the SAME WEEK to install. Keelan was just as courteous and professional as Lisa and did an amazing job! The install was perfect and pristine! I’ve tried working with other companies and honestly they are hands down the best! If there were 10 stars available, I would give them 10!
Thank you Alpha team!

Alpha Gate & Door recently replaced our 3-gate system thats used by over 250 residents and visitors on a daily basis.

Terry was excellent in guiding us from the first visit to the final inspection, including his experiences on what to expect and where any likely issues would occur. With a large property, that was critical to avoiding problems that could pop up.

The crews, clean up and invoicing were all done professionally.

We would strongly recommend Alpha Gate & Door for your gate access needs.

Called on a Saturday morning around 0800 and left a message about issue I was having. I received a call back a few minutes later and was ask to send some pictures of the gate. Once I sent over the pictures, I got another call around 1200, asking if they could come by today as a crew was finished early and could swing by to fix. The gate was fixed by 3:00 same day. Thanks for the quick response and repair. I wasn't expecting that on a Saturday morning. So far so good.
