Discover How Retrofitting Older Commercial Garage Doors Can Transform Your Business. Increase Efficiency, Security, And Curb Appeal With These Simple Upgrades

With the increasing need to improve the functionality and efficiency of older commercial garage doors, retrofitting has become a popular solution. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the various aspects involved in retrofitting older garage doors.

By assessing the condition of the doors, upgrading insulation and weather stripping, enhancing security features and access controls, and improving energy efficiency with modern technology, businesses can significantly enhance the performance and longevity of their garage doors.

Additionally, retrofitting with smart garage door systems offers an innovative approach to managing and monitoring door operations.

Key Takeaways

  • Thoroughly inspect and repair the mechanisms and components of older garage doors to ensure optimal performance and safety.
  • Upgrade the insulation and weather stripping to increase energy efficiency and minimize noise transmission.
  • Enhance security features and access controls with biometric authentication systems for restricted access and eliminate the risk of key theft.
  • Improve energy efficiency by implementing modern technology such as smart thermostats, energy monitoring systems, and lighting automation.

Assessing the Condition of Older Garage Doors

The assessment of the condition of older garage doors is an essential step in determining the necessary retrofitting measures. Before any retrofitting or upgrading can take place, it is important to inspect the mechanisms and overall condition of the garage door. This involves a thorough examination of the door’s components, such as springs, cables, rollers, and tracks, to ensure they are functioning properly. Any damaged or worn-out parts should be repaired or replaced to guarantee optimal performance and safety.

In addition to inspecting the mechanisms, it is crucial to assess the condition of the door panels. Over time, garage door panels can become damaged due to weather exposure, impact, or general wear and tear. These damaged panels not only affect the aesthetic appeal of the garage door but can also compromise its functionality. Therefore, it is necessary to repair or replace any damaged panels to maintain the integrity and efficiency of the garage door.

Upgrading the Insulation and Weather Stripping

Improving insulation and weather stripping is essential for enhancing energy efficiency and reducing heat loss in existing garage door systems. Upgrading the insulation and weather stripping of older commercial garage doors can provide numerous benefits, including:

  • Increased energy efficiency: Proper insulation and weather stripping can prevent air leakage, reducing the amount of energy required to heat or cool the space.

  • Soundproofing options: Upgrading the insulation can help minimize noise transmission, creating a more comfortable and peaceful environment inside the garage.

  • Upgrading to impact-resistant materials: By replacing traditional materials with impact-resistant ones, such as reinforced steel or fiberglass, the garage doors can withstand harsh weather conditions, minimizing the risk of damage and increasing the durability of the system.

These improvements not only enhance the energy efficiency of the garage door system but also contribute to a more comfortable and secure environment. By upgrading the insulation and weather stripping, the garage becomes more energy-efficient and soundproof, providing a sense of belonging and comfort to the users. Moreover, upgrading to impact-resistant materials ensures the longevity of the garage doors and reduces the need for frequent repairs or replacements.

Transition: In addition to enhancing the insulation and weather stripping, it is also important to consider enhancing security features and access controls for older commercial garage doors.

Enhancing Security Features and Access Controls

Enhancing security features and access controls in existing garage door systems can help ensure a safe and controlled environment. With the increasing importance of security in commercial settings, it is essential to consider upgrading the surveillance capabilities and authentication methods of older garage doors.

By enhancing surveillance, businesses can effectively monitor and record activities in and around the garage area, deterring potential threats and promoting a sense of safety among employees and customers.

One effective way to enhance surveillance is by implementing biometric authentication systems. By utilizing fingerprint, iris, or facial recognition technology, businesses can restrict access to authorized personnel only. Biometric authentication provides a high level of security as it is difficult to forge or replicate, reducing the risk of unauthorized entry. Additionally, it eliminates the need for traditional key-based systems, minimizing the risk of key theft or duplication.

Implementing biometric authentication also promotes a sense of belonging within the organization. Employees feel valued and secure knowing that their workplace is equipped with advanced security measures. Customers, too, feel confident in conducting business with organizations that prioritize their safety.

Transition: In addition to enhancing security, improving energy efficiency with modern technology is another crucial aspect of retrofitting older garage doors.

Improving Energy Efficiency With Modern Technology

Implementing modern technology can significantly enhance the energy efficiency of existing infrastructure. When it comes to improving energy efficiency in buildings, smart home integration and cost-effective solutions play a crucial role. By incorporating these advancements, not only can energy consumption be reduced, but also the overall environmental impact can be minimized.

Here are three key ways in which modern technology can improve energy efficiency:

  1. Smart Thermostats: These devices allow for precise temperature control, enabling homeowners to optimize energy usage based on their preferences and occupancy patterns. With features like remote access and learning capabilities, smart thermostats can efficiently regulate heating and cooling, leading to substantial energy savings.

  2. Energy Monitoring Systems: Smart meters and energy monitoring devices provide real-time data on electricity usage, allowing homeowners to identify and address energy wastage. By understanding consumption patterns, individuals can make informed decisions on how to reduce energy usage and lower utility bills.

  3. Lighting Automation: Smart lighting systems utilize motion sensors and timers to automatically adjust lighting levels and turn off lights when not in use. This eliminates unnecessary energy consumption and ensures lights are only illuminated when needed.

Retrofitting With Smart Garage Door Systems

The integration of smart technology in the existing infrastructure can play a significant role in optimizing energy efficiency and functionality. Retrofitting older commercial garage doors with smart systems can provide numerous benefits, including improved security, convenience, and energy savings. By incorporating home automation integration and remote monitoring capabilities into garage door systems, businesses can enhance their overall operations.

Smart garage door systems allow for seamless integration with other smart devices, such as security cameras and motion sensors. This integration enables businesses to remotely monitor and control their garage doors, providing enhanced security and peace of mind. Additionally, these systems can send real-time alerts and notifications to owners or facility managers, allowing for immediate action in case of any security breaches or malfunctions.

Furthermore, smart garage door systems offer enhanced convenience and functionality. With remote monitoring capabilities, owners can easily check the status of their garage doors from anywhere, eliminating the need for physical presence. This allows for efficient management of access to the premises and the ability to grant or deny entry remotely.

Energy efficiency is another important aspect that can be optimized through the integration of smart technology. Smart garage door systems can be programmed to automatically close after a specified period of time, reducing energy loss due to open doors. Additionally, these systems can be integrated with energy management systems, allowing for better control of energy usage.

Conclusion

In conclusion, retrofitting older commercial garage doors is a crucial step in enhancing their performance, security, and energy efficiency.

By assessing their condition, upgrading insulation and weather stripping, enhancing security features and access controls, and implementing modern technology such as smart garage door systems, businesses can significantly improve the functionality and sustainability of their garage doors.

With these improvements, businesses can enjoy increased safety, reduced energy costs, and improved convenience.

Don’t let outdated garage doors hold your business back; take action and retrofit them today for a brighter and more efficient future.

The service and the work that was done was exceptional. We needed to replace three very old (and very heavy) garage doors in a home that was built in 1960. There were a number of challenges along the way and each one was met professionally and in a timely manner. Lisa was an excellent communicator and highly responsive. Kevin did an extraordinary job with a fairly involved installation. His 'can do' attitude was very refreshing and reassuring. As noted, the final result was terrific. The pricing was VERY reasonable and very fair. The install was completed two days ago and I have already received compliments from the neighbors!

On Oct. 31 my electric gate stopped working and I called Alpha Gate and Door and talked to Lisa. She was great and based on my symptoms said she thought it was the battery and she would send Kealan out the next day. He came and replaced the battery with a 12 v 55ah battery. I asked him to rehang my reflector light on my neighbors new fence so the motion sensor would work. It had worked fine prior to that being taken down. He did that and it worked for a minute and then stopped. He rewired it and it worked once and he left. The next day I noticed the sensor was not working but I didn’t really care because my dog is too small to trigger it. I was charged $448 -$169 for the service call, $249 for the battery and $30 to rewire the sensor. I work exclusively from home as an attorney and never even use the gate during the week. A few weeks later the gate stopped operation completely and I called on Dec. 6. Lisa said she would send Kealan out. He called me and I said the gate would not open at all, the sensor was not working and the sensor was making a nonstop buzzing noise. He arrived fairly late in the day and I saw him pull into my driveway but he did not come to my door and went straight to the gate. I immediately went out there and I saw when he opened the cover that the battery charger lights were not on. He was in a very bad mood and starting ripping the battery out and said I needed a new battery. I said I guess it was because the battery charger wasn’t plugged in. I was not mad about it because that can happen to anyone. He got really mad at that point, I guess because I knew what had happened. He demanded to know whether I had unplugged it, grabbed a huge battery that would not even fit in my unit, then declared the charger had “allegedly” not been plugged in. As he was trying to force the battery in and was slamming everything around, I asked him if he had a smaller battery. He said no, it was whomever installed my gate opener’s fault because the antenna was on the left and they were usually on the right. He continued to try to force it but could not get the cover on. So he gave up and said he would come back Monday with a smaller battery. I assumed the sensor was not working because the battery had died. I heard nothing from anyone the following Monday and had had it so I called Lisa and yelled and told her the way Kealan had behaved and when was the battery actually going to be installed. She said she would talk to Kealan and I said do you have anybody else who is not a jackass who could come instead. She said she would investigate and call me back. She never called me back and apparently the next day around lunch Kealan snuck onto my property, did not tell me he was there, and put in another battery and texted me the gate was now working. I went outside to try it and the remote was not working at all. I have programmed remotes many times (I have done a lot of products liability work and handled cases with complex machinery failures and deposed a lot of engineers so I am not unfamiliar with this type of equipment) and checked it and the receiver was getting the signal from the transmitter but the control board was not opening the gate.So I called Lisa, explained he had come but not told me he was there, and that the remote was not opening the gate. I also apologized for yelling at her the day before because it was not her fault. She said she would tell him. After that call I remembered there is a reset button on the Patriot control board so I went out and pushed it and that caused the remote to work so I called Lisa and said it was working. The new battery is smaller than the one he had originally put in and retails for about $95. The motion sensor still does not work, I have done jumping jacks in front of of it to know avail. I am not bothering to call again about that because Kealan would probably get really mad again. He does NOT like his competence put into question. You decide if $249 is a fair markup on a $95 battery.

I highly recommend Alpha Gate & Door Company! The entire process was incredibly quick and professional! I spoke with Lisa (she’s amazing and extremely knowledgeable) on Tuesday and she came out Wednesday with a recommendation to replace the gate opener that was faulty and couldn’t handle the weight of my gate. I received the reasonable quote the same day and their technician, Keelan, was at my house on Friday of the SAME WEEK to install. Keelan was just as courteous and professional as Lisa and did an amazing job! The install was perfect and pristine! I’ve tried working with other companies and honestly they are hands down the best! If there were 10 stars available, I would give them 10!
Thank you Alpha team!

Alpha Gate & Door recently replaced our 3-gate system thats used by over 250 residents and visitors on a daily basis.

Terry was excellent in guiding us from the first visit to the final inspection, including his experiences on what to expect and where any likely issues would occur. With a large property, that was critical to avoiding problems that could pop up.

The crews, clean up and invoicing were all done professionally.

We would strongly recommend Alpha Gate & Door for your gate access needs.
