Key Takeaways

  • Regularly inspect springs for wear and tear, including rust, cracks, and gaps between coils.
  • Promptly address any signs of damage to prevent more serious issues from arising.
  • Regular spring inspections allow for early detection of damage and timely repairs.
  • Maintaining the functionality and safety of the garage door extends the lifespan of the springs and saves on expenses.

Understanding the Importance of Garage Door Springs

Garage door springs play a crucial role in the smooth and safe operation of your garage door. They counterbalance the weight of the door, making it easier to open and close. Regular maintenance is important to ensure proper functioning. Springs can become worn out or damaged due to factors like weather conditions, lack of lubrication, or excessive use. It’s essential to inspect your springs regularly for signs of wear or damage, such as rust, fraying cables, or gaps in the coils. These issues can lead to spring failure and potential harm or damage if not addressed promptly. Understanding the importance of garage door springs and the common causes of spring damage will help you prepare for the inspection phase.

Preparing for the Inspection

Before starting the inspection, make sure to get everything ready. Garage door maintenance is essential for the smooth functioning of your garage door springs.

To begin, gather the necessary tools such as a ladder, gloves, safety glasses, and a flashlight. These items will ensure your safety and help you thoroughly inspect the springs.

Next, familiarize yourself with common spring problems such as rust, fraying cables, or loose tension. Understanding these issues will allow you to identify any potential damage during the inspection.

Once prepared, visually examine the springs for signs of wear and tear or any visible cracks. Look out for uneven tension or gaps between coils as well. This careful examination will give you an idea of their condition and whether further action is needed.

Transitioning into the next section about visual inspection of the springs:

Now that you have prepared yourself and gathered all necessary tools, it’s time to visually inspect the garage door springs in detail.

Visual Inspection of the Springs

When conducting a visual inspection of your garage door springs, it’s important to look for signs of wear and tear. Examine the springs closely for any indications of damage such as fraying or stretching.

Additionally, check for rust or corrosion on the surface, as this can weaken the springs over time.

By carefully examining these key points, you can identify potential issues early on and take necessary steps to ensure the safety and functionality of your garage door.

Look for Signs of Wear and Tear

When inspecting garage door springs, it’s crucial to look for signs of wear and tear. Identifying common problems and signs of imminent failure is essential for safety and functionality. Start by closely examining the springs for visible damage like cracks or breaks. Check for gaps or misalignments between coils, indicating weakened areas. Also, look for stretched or elongated springs that may not support the door’s weight properly. Watch out for rust or corrosion, which can weaken the springs over time. Being thorough in your visual inspection and addressing wear and tear promptly can prevent potential issues with the springs.

Moving forward into the next section about ‘check for rust or corrosion,’ it’s important to thoroughly examine each spring for these specific issues.

Check for Rust or Corrosion

When checking for rust or corrosion on your garage door springs, it is important to thoroughly examine them. Rust or corrosion can significantly weaken the springs and compromise the safety of your garage door. Rust prevention plays a crucial role in maintaining the longevity and functionality of the springs.

To begin, visually inspect all parts of the springs for any signs of rust. Look for orange-brown patches or flaking metal, as these are indicators of rust. Pay close attention to areas where moisture may accumulate, such as near the bottom of the spring coils or around brackets and hinges.

If you discover any rusty spots, take a wire brush and remove the rust. Afterward, apply a rust-preventive spray or lubricant to protect against future corrosion. This step is essential for ensuring the continued performance of your garage door springs.

Performing these maintenance techniques regularly will help extend the lifespan of your springs and ensure optimal performance. Now, let’s move on to testing the springs to ensure they are functioning properly without any issues.

Testing the Springs

To properly test the springs of your garage door, there are two key points to consider.

First, you need to perform a balance test by disconnecting the opener and manually opening the door halfway. If the door stays in place, it indicates that the springs are balanced correctly.

Secondly, you should check the tension of the springs by lifting the door manually. It should open smoothly and without any resistance.

These tests will help ensure that your garage door springs are in good condition and functioning properly.

Perform a Balance Test

Ensure the safety of your garage door by performing a balance test. This simple test will give you peace of mind and keep your loved ones secure. Start by disconnecting the garage door opener so that you can manually operate the door. Lift the door halfway up and let go. If it stays in place, then your springs are properly balanced.

However, if the door falls or rises on its own, this indicates an imbalance and potential spring adjustment is needed. Imbalanced springs can cause strain on other parts of the garage door system and increase the risk of accidents or damage.

In the next section, we will discuss how to check the tension of the springs to further ensure their proper functioning.

Check the Tension of the Springs

Checking the tension of the springs is crucial for maintaining optimal performance and preventing potential issues.

Start by measuring the tension of each spring individually. Use a tape measure to determine the length of the spring when it’s fully extended. This measurement will serve as a reference point for future inspections.

If you notice that one spring is significantly shorter than the other, it may indicate a problem with that particular spring.

Additionally, if the springs are loose or have lost their tension over time, it might be necessary to replace them. Spring replacement should only be attempted by experienced individuals due to the high risk involved.

Now that you have assessed the tension of your garage door springs, let’s move on to taking action and addressing any issues that may arise.

Taking Action

If you have identified damage to your garage door springs, it is important to consider whether you should attempt a DIY repair or seek professional assistance.

While DIY repairs can save you money, they can also be complex and dangerous if not done correctly.

To extend the lifespan of your garage door springs, there are several maintenance tips you should follow, such as regularly lubricating them and inspecting for any signs of wear or damage.

DIY Repair vs. Professional Assistance

Consider hiring a professional to address any issues with your garage door springs, as DIY repair can be challenging and potentially dangerous.

While the idea of saving money by fixing it yourself may be enticing, there are risks involved that should not be taken lightly. Garage door springs are tightly wound and under immense tension, making them unpredictable and prone to snapping if mishandled. This can lead to serious injuries or property damage.

Additionally, attempting DIY repairs without proper knowledge and tools may result in further damage that could require costly professional repairs later on. Therefore, it is wise to invest in the expertise of a trained technician who can safely assess and fix any problems with your garage door springs.

To ensure the longevity of your garage door springs, regular maintenance is essential. Stay tuned for some valuable tips on how you can extend their lifespan and keep your garage functioning smoothly.

Maintenance Tips for Extending the Lifespan of Garage Door Springs

Regular upkeep is key to ensuring your garage runs smoothly and springs eternal. Here are three maintenance tips to help extend the lifespan of your garage door springs:

  1. Lubricate regularly: Apply a silicone-based lubricant to the springs, hinges, and rollers at least once every six months. This will reduce friction and prevent unnecessary wear and tear.

  2. Check for balance: Test the balance of your garage door by disconnecting the opener and manually lifting it halfway. If it stays in place, great! If not, you may need to adjust the tension or call a professional for assistance.

  3. Inspect for damage: Regularly inspect your springs for signs of wear, such as rust, cracks, or gaps between coils. If you notice any damage, it’s important to address it promptly before it leads to more serious issues.

By following these maintenance tips, you can ensure that your garage door springs remain in good condition and enjoy a longer lifespan.

Conclusion

Now that you have inspected your garage door springs, you can feel confident in the safety and functionality of your garage. By understanding the importance of these springs and taking the time to visually inspect and test them, you have taken proactive steps to prevent potential damage or accidents.

Remember, just as we must inspect and maintain our physical surroundings, it is also essential to examine ourselves internally for any hidden springs that may require attention. By keeping a vigilant eye on all aspects of our lives, we can ensure a smooth journey ahead.

The service and the work that was done was exceptional. We needed to replace three very old (and very heavy) garage doors in a home that was built in 1960. There were a number of challenges along the way and each one was met professionally and in a timely manner. Lisa was an excellent communicator and highly responsive. Kevin did an extraordinary job with a fairly involved installation. His 'can do' attitude was very refreshing and reassuring. As noted, the final result was terrific. The pricing was VERY reasonable and very fair. The install was completed two days ago and I have already received compliments from the neighbors!

On Oct. 31 my electric gate stopped working and I called Alpha Gate and Door and talked to Lisa. She was great and based on my symptoms said she thought it was the battery and she would send Kealan out the next day. He came and replaced the battery with a 12 v 55ah battery. I asked him to rehang my reflector light on my neighbors new fence so the motion sensor would work. It had worked fine prior to that being taken down. He did that and it worked for a minute and then stopped. He rewired it and it worked once and he left. The next day I noticed the sensor was not working but I didn’t really care because my dog is too small to trigger it. I was charged $448 -$169 for the service call, $249 for the battery and $30 to rewire the sensor. I work exclusively from home as an attorney and never even use the gate during the week. A few weeks later the gate stopped operation completely and I called on Dec. 6. Lisa said she would send Kealan out. He called me and I said the gate would not open at all, the sensor was not working and the sensor was making a nonstop buzzing noise. He arrived fairly late in the day and I saw him pull into my driveway but he did not come to my door and went straight to the gate. I immediately went out there and I saw when he opened the cover that the battery charger lights were not on. He was in a very bad mood and starting ripping the battery out and said I needed a new battery. I said I guess it was because the battery charger wasn’t plugged in. I was not mad about it because that can happen to anyone. He got really mad at that point, I guess because I knew what had happened. He demanded to know whether I had unplugged it, grabbed a huge battery that would not even fit in my unit, then declared the charger had “allegedly” not been plugged in. As he was trying to force the battery in and was slamming everything around, I asked him if he had a smaller battery. He said no, it was whomever installed my gate opener’s fault because the antenna was on the left and they were usually on the right. He continued to try to force it but could not get the cover on. So he gave up and said he would come back Monday with a smaller battery. I assumed the sensor was not working because the battery had died. I heard nothing from anyone the following Monday and had had it so I called Lisa and yelled and told her the way Kealan had behaved and when was the battery actually going to be installed. She said she would talk to Kealan and I said do you have anybody else who is not a jackass who could come instead. She said she would investigate and call me back. She never called me back and apparently the next day around lunch Kealan snuck onto my property, did not tell me he was there, and put in another battery and texted me the gate was now working. I went outside to try it and the remote was not working at all. I have programmed remotes many times (I have done a lot of products liability work and handled cases with complex machinery failures and deposed a lot of engineers so I am not unfamiliar with this type of equipment) and checked it and the receiver was getting the signal from the transmitter but the control board was not opening the gate.So I called Lisa, explained he had come but not told me he was there, and that the remote was not opening the gate. I also apologized for yelling at her the day before because it was not her fault. She said she would tell him. After that call I remembered there is a reset button on the Patriot control board so I went out and pushed it and that caused the remote to work so I called Lisa and said it was working. The new battery is smaller than the one he had originally put in and retails for about $95. The motion sensor still does not work, I have done jumping jacks in front of of it to know avail. I am not bothering to call again about that because Kealan would probably get really mad again. He does NOT like his competence put into question. You decide if $249 is a fair markup on a $95 battery.

I highly recommend Alpha Gate & Door Company! The entire process was incredibly quick and professional! I spoke with Lisa (she’s amazing and extremely knowledgeable) on Tuesday and she came out Wednesday with a recommendation to replace the gate opener that was faulty and couldn’t handle the weight of my gate. I received the reasonable quote the same day and their technician, Keelan, was at my house on Friday of the SAME WEEK to install. Keelan was just as courteous and professional as Lisa and did an amazing job! The install was perfect and pristine! I’ve tried working with other companies and honestly they are hands down the best! If there were 10 stars available, I would give them 10!

Alpha Gate & Door recently replaced our 3-gate system thats used by over 250 residents and visitors on a daily basis.

Terry was excellent in guiding us from the first visit to the final inspection, including his experiences on what to expect and where any likely issues would occur. With a large property, that was critical to avoiding problems that could pop up.

The crews, clean up and invoicing were all done professionally.

We would strongly recommend Alpha Gate & Door for your gate access needs.
